When Summit Academy Community School – Parma ninth grader Emmaleigh Diamond heard the news that she would become a published author, gratitude overcame her.
“I’m forever thankful for this,” says Diamond, describing how a “normal day” became one she will never forget when her ELA teacher, Katie Desch, told her that Young Authors USA selected her story for publication. Diamond’s piece, “Test Gone Wrong,” can be found in Stranger Sagas: Where Mystery Meets Creativity, released in October.
In keeping with the book’s theme and 100-word-or-less criteria, Diamond’s tale is about main character, Charles, who runs through laboratory hallways to escape a “horror” chasing him.
“Emmaleigh is imaginative and creative and likes to write, but she was nervous about entering the contest,” says Desch, who encouraged her to explore ideas that led to the winning story.
Diamond says story ideas, many inspired by shows, video games and even nature, have always come to her mind, as a lifelong writer.
“I love the fact that I can create my own worlds and express ideas I have in mind. The fact that someday I can create stories that people from all around the world can love and give them an interest makes me happy,” she says.
Desch describes her student as one who avoids the spotlight and courageously stepped outside of her comfort zone with her story submission.
“I think other students could learn that believing in yourself requires just as much courage as facing your fears,” Desch says. “I am so proud of Emmaleigh.”
