Principal Angela Donovan and her team at Summit Academy Community School for Alternative Learners – Xenia know the power of support and positivity. They start every morning in that spirit, greeting students with high fives, happy dances and belief in their potential. The National School Choice Awareness Foundation recognized Summit Academy Community School for Alternative Learners – Xenia as an “All Star,” for its student and parent engagement endeavors. Fewer than 5 percent of the 26,400 schools across the country that participate in National School Choice Week, which took place January 25-31 this year, receive this distinction, according to the foundation.

To those familiar with Summit Academy – Xenia, the recognition may come as no surprise. The school’s ethos centers on a holistic, positive approach that unites and engages students, teachers and parents.

“For students with disabilities, it’s giving them the opportunity to grow in a safe and healthy environment and feel included,” says Principal Angela Donovan.

Welcomed with high-fives, fist bumps and occasional happy dances every school morning, students at Summit Academy– Xenia know their value. Before children enter their classrooms, at least five school administrators or teachers have greeted them with warmth and positivity.

Summit Academy – Xenia’s Dungeons & Dragons Club engages high school students in after-school quests of imagination, teamwork and strategy. Students in the popular club work together to solve problems, create stories, build confidence and have fun. “Engagement is important at Summit Academy because strong connections between students, families and staff create the foundation for success. When students feel supported and families feel informed and involved, learning becomes more meaningful and students are more motivated to grow,” Donovan says.

All-star designees celebrate students, teachers and their local community. All-star schools are also noted for hosting positive events and activities that help parents understand school choice options. Dean of Students Nancy Hernandez says the recognition “affirms the important work happening every day at Summit Academy and reflects the dedication, passion and teamwork of our students, staff and families.”

This year, the K-12 community school is hosting an array of indoor and outdoor activities and games, according to Hernandez. This is the second year Summit Academy Community School for Alternative Learners – Xenia has been recognized as an “All Star” school by the nonprofit National School Choice Awareness Foundation for National School Choice Week.
