When Summit Academy Secondary School – Akron opened a position for a lunch server at the start of the school year, Tyler McCrae emerged as the top candidate. A 2019 graduate of the school, McCrae was known for her reliability and strong work ethic. She received the job offer and accepted it to the delight of Summit Academy school officials.
McCrae was referred to the job by teacher Melanie Grady, who interviewed her for the post, along with Principal Ralph Grant.
“We knew she was reliable and always did what was right when she was a student here,” Grant says. “Tyler is trustworthy. We knew we could count on her and she would be a good fit. She’s been a blessing.”
From accepting, counting and readying breakfast bags to serving hot lunches, McCrae says she enjoys
all aspects of her role.
“I like my supervisors and the work I’m doing,” she says, adding that the students think it’s “cool” having a young server. They exchange hellos with her as they pass by her while she works.
“The students and staff love interacting with Tyler. I believe she is a perfect fit for the school food program,” says Grady. “She has accomplished a lot; I am very proud of her. She always has a smile, ready to help.”
On this busy Tuesday morning, McCrae greets lunch delivery driver Connie Campbell, taking inventory of the newly arrived fresh items and matching them against the day’s lunch menu. She readies meals for students who will
soon funnel through the cafeteria in two waves. She’ll later tidy up the kitchen and prepare for the next day.
Once on the receiving end of school meals, McCrae says relishes her job as the school’s lunch server. It shows in her job success.
“Tyler has been doing a fantastic job in her role as a lunch server. She adapted well to the changes that were made to the breakfast and lunch programs,” says Director of Food Services Gina Nash. “Tyler takes initiative in getting things done correctly and efficiently. She is an asset to the Akron Secondary building and students!”
