Summit Academy Transition High School – Dayton was honored to host State Representative Brian Lampton for an enriching visit with students in the school’s History and Government classes. Rep. Lampton, currently serving his third term representing Ohio’s 70th District in the House of Representatives, engaged students in a dynamic discussion about state and federal government, legislative processes and current policy issues.
In addition to his legislative role, Rep. Lampton serves as Chairman of the House Insurance Committee and is an active member of several key committees, including Veterans and Military Affairs, Medicaid and Small Business.
During his visit, Rep. Lampton offered students an inside look at public service, explaining the crucial differences between state and federal governance. He emphasized Ohio’s constitutional requirement to pass a balanced budget annually by June 30 and discussed term limits applied to Ohio lawmakers—contrasting these state rules with federal practices, which do not impose a balanced budget requirement or legislative term limits beyond the presidency.
Students responded enthusiastically, asking numerous questions and engaging in thoughtful dialogue. Rep. Lampton walked them through the legislative process in Ohio, detailing how bills are introduced, debated, and passed into law. He also shared how certain bills may be fast-tracked with the backing of state leadership, such as the Governor or the Speaker of the House.
One topic that sparked particular interest was Senate Bill 158, which addresses the regulation of cell phone use. Rep. Lampton shared the current status of the bill—still under consideration in a Senate committee—and presented multiple perspectives on its potential impacts. Students eagerly debated the merits of the bill, demonstrating a keen awareness of civic responsibility and public policy.
“We are grateful to Representative Lampton for taking time out of his busy schedule to speak with our students,” said Principal Lisa Brown. “His insights brought real-world context to our curriculum and inspired meaningful dialogue about civic engagement.”
