Planning, decision-making, calculation and visualization are just a few of the skills students at Summit Academy – Warren Middle and Secondary put into play during their December 2024 chess tournament. Senior CJ Ebelender claimed the champion title for a second consecutive year. The previous tournament took place in spring 2024
“The tournament allows our students to work and develop strategy while in action,” says Sensei Biana Mathews, who organized both 2024 competitions.
Champion Ebelender says he practiced three to four times monthly in preparation for the tournament.
“It was stressful during the tournament. However, it makes you focus on pushing yourself to do your best,” he says.
In all, 22 students competed with top finishers including sophomore Jayden Bowers, second place; junior Jason Louk, third place; and senior Rafael Diaz, fourth place.
“The tournament is a healthy way to compete, and it gives the kids something to look forward to,” says Mathews, who is planning a spring tournament.
