Just as public schools are important in meeting the needs of most students, charter schools are essential to meet the needs of the remaining students. ALL Ohio children are entitled to an appropriate education and the public schools cannot meet that need for ALL students. Most schools try; some are better than others, but usually they fall short for students with hidden disabilities like ADHD. Summit Academy, however, is designed for students with ADHD! My son went to four different public schools before we found Summit Academy. This is his 5th year at Summit and I want him to graduate from Summit Academy. Without the choice of charter schools, my son would have remained the student no teacher wants. He has difficulty staying on task, is very talkative, and acts inappropriately in some social situations. He doesn’t fit in with kids in regular classrooms. He is often misunderstood by teachers and principals who are not trained to deal with ADHD. However, at Summit my son has teachers and an aide who are educated in ways to teach alternative learners. The classrooms are designed to incorporate social skills training and an aide is available to assist any student as needed. All the students at Summit are facing similar challenges, so my son is no longer “the bad student”, but is one of many who need to have reminders and redirection. He has friends here!! While that’s not the main focus of education, socialization is an important part of school. He has self-esteem here. He can succeed.
