At Summit Academy School in Lorain, it’s not unusual to see a student grab a squish ball from a bin or take a classroom break, a brief moment to regroup and refocus. Here, school staff members look out for students’ educational, social and emotional well-beings with a keen understanding of special education challenges they may face.
Classrooms with designated relaxation stations, morning discussion circles for students, and other special elements incorporated into the school setting give Summit Academy Lorain students, teachers and families cause to celebrate National School Choice Week, January 26 to February 1.
Indeed, they will.
Among the school’s weeklong lineup of activities, students will don bright yellow scarves, create a rap/song, dance or poem, design themed banners, and write thank-you notes to supportive parents, teachers or staff members.
“Our school is participating in National School Choice week to raise awareness that other education options do exist and to thank our families and teachers for taking an active role in finding a placement that fits for us,” says Lead Intervention Specialist Melissa Cicerchi.
Held every January, National School Choice Week is the world’s largest annual celebration of opportunity in education.
