Summit Academy – Lorain Elementary students (l-r) Andrew, Lizzie, Kevin and Audrey proclaim their adoration for their school with words and pictures painted on rocks for National School Choice Week.

“My teachers”

“The gym”

“Math”

“All of the staff’s hard work”

“Everything!”

These are just a few of the answers students at Summit Academy Community School for Alternative Learners – Lorain shared when they were asked what they like most about their school. Combined in a video montage, the students’ praises are part of the school’s activities for National School Choice Week, January 22-28.

Summit Academy fifth-grade student Josiah adds a splash of vibrant blue to his rock painting.

“We’re celebrating that our kids get to come here, and parents get to choose the right environment for their children,” says Principal Jasmine Rengh, who describes her school community as one of close bonds shared by staff and students. “Our students love being here and don’t want to miss a day of school. The vast majority of our kids show up every day with perfect attendance.”

The students’ expressions of school pride and joy are also displayed in a drone video as well as on painted rocks. The students are embellishing the rocks with colorful painted words and pictures to express their love for “Lorain Elementary.” When completed, the mini cobblestone display will grace the grassy area outside the school’s main entrance until the end of the school year, when students will be able to take their rocks home.

Meanwhile, photographer Mike Baker of First Choice Photography used his videography skills to capture the students’ and staff members’ excitement by way of a drone in this special Summit Academy Lorain Elementary School Choice 2023 footage.

“Our students and families have such a love for Summit,” says Rengh, who is embracing this, her first year as the school’s principal, with a spirit of understanding, reflection and joy. “I’ve learned a lot from being here just a few months, a lot from the kids. Our staff and students are so supportive of one another in our little school community.”

National School Choice Week is off to a rockin’ good start for fifth-grader Althea and the entire student body at Summit Academy Community School for Alternative Learners – Lorain.
