Rebeca Tyner is stepping into her new role as Summit Academy Assistant Superintendent with a desire to support school staff members and help them tap their leadership potential.
“It is important to me that I continue to build leaders around me by offering them unique mentorship and leadership opportunities in their respective buildings, to coach these skills,” Tyner shared. “The more we invest in the leaders around us, the more we can invest in the learning opportunities for students.”
Tyner joined Summit Academy three years ago as a curriculum administrator. Since then, she also has served as an interim principal for several Summit Academy campuses.
She said she was initially drawn to Summit Academy for its therapeutic model. “Coming from both teaching and instructional coaching in a chartered, urban school experience, I couldn’t express just how innovative this was to students’ education,” she noted, adding that Summit Academy’s emphasis on supporting the “whole child” resonated with her.
In her new role, Tyner will help principals with Summit Academy’s new performance-based evaluation process; provide mentorship; support schools’ various team structures; and assist with sponsor compliance needs, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, enrollment efforts, Infinite Campus, Board meeting representation and District Leadership Team meeting collaboration. She also will serve as the curriculum administrator for Summit Academy Community School – Parma.
Tyner expressed her commitment to support school principals and administrators wholeheartedly so they can see their ideas for enhancements within their schools to fruition.
“This is where I like to bring opportunities for collaboration and problem solving to the table,” she said. “We lead by helping others and growing others. This is always in my mind when I start my day.”
Prior to joining Summit Academy, Tyner was an academic coach for Imagine Leadership Academy in Akron for five years. Previously, as a third-grade teacher for Imagine Leadership Academy, Tyner was a two-time recipient of the school’s Teacher of the Year honor and was selected as Imagine Teacher of Ohio in 2016.
Tyner graduated summa cum laude from Kent State University with a B.S. in Education (Early Childhood) and Master of Education (Reading Specialization). She earned her K-6 Ohio Principal Licensure from Walsh University.
Tyner said she enjoys the simplicity of life’s special moments, especially sharing time outdoors with her husband, Brad, and 10-year-old German Shepard, Milo. “We love sitting out on the back deck and soaking up the sun, exploring zoos and enjoying family time at home,” she said.
