Summit Academy – Dayton senior Julian Harris is living proof that meaningful change is possible with effort and reflection, says Principal Lisa Brown. She says his journey is a reminder that early struggles do not define a student’s future.
Julian started at Summit Academy as an elementary school student. “What makes his story meaningful is not where he started, but how steadily he chose to move forward,” says Brown, describing his narrative of transformation; one of growth, dedication, self-awareness and notable academic strides.
“By tenth grade, small changes began to take hold. He became more organized, more willing to ask for help, and more aware of the impact his choices had on his progress. These weren’t dramatic transformations overnight, but deliberate steps that showed growing maturity,” Brown explains.
As a junior, Julian’s efforts came with consistency in stronger study habits, class participation and pride in his achievements. He also faced obstacles head on, rather than avoid them, Brown explains.
“Teachers could now rely on him, not just for completing work, but for contributing thoughtfully to the learning environment,” says Brown.
Today, Julian, a senior approaching his high school graduation, portrays confidence, capability and responsibility, Brown says. She describes how Julian manages his time effectively, supports his peers and demonstrates a sense of purpose in his academic and personal goals.
“The growth he has shown over four years reflects resilience, self-awareness and determination,” Brown says.
Julian’s teachers express their pride in him, for his work ethic, responsible nature and peer support.
Julian’s classmates nicknamed him “Unc,” as they see him as a role model and confidant.
Meet Julian Harris
What is your best Summit Academy memory or experience?
It’s difficult to say because I gained a lot from being at Summit Academy, especially how to take care of myself and also, my good friend group.
What will you miss most when you leave Summit Academy?
The main thing I’ll miss is my favorite teachers and having good life experiences. Basically, just the teachers being there for me and to talk with. Mr. [Brandyn] Jackson, Mr. [John] Sgro and Mr. [Dustin] Williams; those three I look up to or can come to if I’m having a bad day. I feel comfortable talking to my teachers instead of keeping something to myself all day.
What’s been your favorite class?
One of my favorites has been history, because history gives you a lot of background. Most people don’t understand the meaning of history, and significance of things that went on back in the day. My second favorite class is biology. It’s more hands-on and it’s fun. I’ve had a lot of good experiences in biology class. My favorite science project was on plants.
Describe the friendships you’ve made at Summit Academy.
I surround myself with people who will be successful. I keep them close with me. I make sure they’re OK. I check in on them. I still have the same group since middle school. We can sit down and talk. I like to keep a small circle. They care for you and will be there for you. If a friend is going through something hard, they know I’ll be there for them.
What’s next?
I’d like to go to trade school for plumbing. If that doesn’t go as planned, I’d like to pursue technology.
Congratulations, Julian! You are an inspiration to others! Summit Academy looks forward to your future successes.
