When ultra runner Alex Ramsey, finisher of the 3,100-mile Sri Chimnoy Self-Transcendence race, visited Summit Academy Akron Middle School earlier this month, he brought along an undeniable spirit of humility
and gratitude. Now was his time to thank the students who rallied behind him throughout the two-month-long race, in which he placed fourth out of 10. Ramsey embraced the school community’s love and fanfare during his daylong stopover.
As he ran for 50 days, 3 hours, 53 minutes and 11 seconds, from August 20-October 20 in the Jamaica Queens, N.Y. foot race, Ramsey received a powerful and steady rallying cry from the middle schoolers. School Community Culture Coordinator Tom Fausnight, Ramsey’s former middle and high school wrestling coach, inspired the support through video and text messages, and by traveling to New York to see Ramsey at the race.
“Knowing there was support from students at the school provided me a sense of meaning. That infused my running with joy knowing this experience was more than just myself running,” said Ramsey. “I am speechless. This is where I need to continue to grow to feel worthy of the accolades and connection. I did something that I love so much and am so full of gratitude that it did extend past me.”
Students filed in line, excited to meet the special visitor they had
come to know over the past months. As they joined Ramsey for brief chats and autographs, the students expressed their respect for the runner, who reciprocated with wide smiles and words of encouragement.
“You’re going to be real good when you get older. Keep it up,” he said to one student.
To another, an aspiring runner, Ramsey said he would be cheering the student on when he is older and making his own mark as a runner.
To each and every student, Ramsey imparted kindness and connection.

Reflecting on his younger self, Ramsey said as a child his high energy level led to behavioral issues. “I remember those times being in class, making those disruptions and getting emotional about it,” he said. “This is something I had to turn around to excel. Teachers, coaches, would touch my heart, encouraging me to stay focused.”
Ramsey channeled his energy into sports and became a triple threat, excelling in football, wrestling and
track and field, bringing home state championship titles. By 2012, the all-around athlete and University of Cincinnati graduate started running ultra marathons, beginning with a 50-mile race in Colorado. His momentum continued as he tackled 100-mile races and other multi-day races, including a cross-country foot
race from Huntington Beach, Calif. to Washington, D.C. in 2015. He ran most of that race barefoot.
Now, the 40-year-old is continuing his recovery from the taxing 3,100-mile race, much of it spent inward, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. He is extending himself outward with gratitude and encouragement of others, in particular, his Summit Academy Akron Middle School student comrades.
“They are limitless. They have it within themselves to work past any limitations,” Ramsey said. “My hope is to provide them inspiration to see a bigger picture.”
