Members of the Summit Academy – Columbus Student Leadership Class participated in Environmental STEM Day at the Nationwide and Ohio Bureau 4-H Center in Columbus on September 30. The event gave the 10th-12th graders the opportunity to rotate through a series of interactive exhibits that highlighted science, technology, engineering and environmental careers.
As they visited various exhibits, the students met with representatives from the Ohio EPA, COSI, DriveOhio, Franklin Park Conservancy, Ohio Energy Project and The Ohio State University. They also coded with robots, tested wind turbine designs, explored aquatic species, examined soil and water quality and observed virtual reality design projects.
“This trip was a special opportunity for our Leadership Program students to
engage with real-world STEM careers, connect with environmental professionals and build on the leadership they are developing at Summit Academy,” says Principal Cheryl Elliott.
The school’s Student Leadership Class, led by President Aveon Missick, and Vice President Desi Hester, both in 11th grade, help plan events, support younger school
Dragons and provide ideas to improve the school and community.
“Aveon and Desi are role models for their peers and are committed to making Summit a place where everyone feels proud to be a Dragon,” says Elliott.
From school beautification and student mentoring to participating in family events and community service, the Leadership Class exemplifies what it means to be a Summit leader, explains Elliott.
“It’s about making a difference at Summit Academy. It’s a chance to learn real leadership skills like teamwork, communication and responsibility while also having fun and working together,” she says.
