Students received hugs, hellos and high-fives as they funneled through the doors of Summit Academy Community School – Warren on their first day of school, August 20. Many of the K-7 students even dove into the arms of their teachers, amplifying the joy-filled scene at the 2106 Arbor Avenue SE community school.

“We are happy to see you. It’s going to be an awesome day,” Principal Amanda McGinnis told the children as she welcomed them with an embrace at the door, alongside Summit Academy Management CEO John Guyer, shortly after 7 a.m.

Teachers, intervention specialists, instructional aides, IEP coordinators and the school’s longtime sensei continued the warm receptions with students in the school hallways and classroom entries, where first day-of-school jitters seemed all but nonexistent.

Many students sported superhero T-shirts and other garb, in keeping with the school’s theme.

“Our building has a superhero theme, and we feel fantastic to have the SAM Superman Guyer in the house,” McGinnis joked.

“I saw a lot of happy faces,” said Guyer, noting those of not just the school’s 90-plus students, but its staff as well.

“My staff are the ones who make this school so special. I am so blessed.” McGinnis said.
