A fresh fruit-and-vegetable program was introduced to students in grades K-6 this month. The federally funded program provides a healthy snack for students, outside of the free breakfast and lunch. The children not only enjoy nibbling on nutritious nosh every Monday and Wednesday, but they also receive some fun and interesting facts about it. Think: Why do people say, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away?”

“I’m excited to bring the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program to our K-6 students at Summit Academies this year,” says Director of Food Services Gina Nash.

Nash says the program was originally introduced to schools as a way to expose students to different types of fruits and vegetables they may not try at home and to teach them healthy snacking habits to help fight childhood obesity.

“I hope the students not only enjoy their afternoon fruits and veggies but find some new favorites along the way,” Nash says.

That possibility is already in play at Summit Academy Akron Elementary School where watermelon radishes, along with a variety of other produce, made a recent appearance.

“The students have really enjoyed the new fruits and vegetable snacks that started this past week.  Many of the produce selections are new to the students and they have been eager to try the interesting fruits and veggies,” says Principal Dawn Presley, noting the bright pink heirloom radish with a pale green peel as an example. “We are so thankful for the grant that provided these delicious goodies and look forward to having more.”

Instructional Coach Lindsey Durbin adds, “Each week, Akron Elementary students delight in a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables during snack time. From crunchy peppers to juicy berries, these healthy treats fuel their learning and play while encouraging nutritious habits. We love seeing our students excited about making healthy [choices] and trying new things.”
