Lifechanging. That’s the impact Columbus Blues Alliance volunteer Or Mars hopes the alliance’s Blues in the Schools program will have on Summit Academy Transition High School – Columbus students. Presented by blues legend Teeny Tucker, who will be accompanied by virtuosic guitarist Zayne Harshaw, the January 27 program promises to not only be fun but inspiring, says Mars.

“The blues reaches into your soul and changes you, and the students will get a taste of that on Monday,” says Mars, describing Tucker’s extraordinary presence and in-depth knowledge about the historical and societal context in which blues music was developed. “She can sing them in a way that shows you what it means to feel the blues. She is a model of a proud black woman who loves who she is and the culture she represents.”
Tucker will lead the interactive program, inspiring students to sing and share, while Harshaw will play songs. Harshaw, who is autistic, brings a sense of validation to those with special needs and a deeper understanding to others who don’t think they have special needs, says Mars, noting, “We all have things to overcome, and Zayne shows that we can through our vehicle of choice. His is music.”

Focused on educating children about blues music and culture, Blues in the Schools answers a need for art education, which Mars describes as an pathway for students to open different elements of their intellect and personalities.
“There are many ways to learn and learning through music is not only impactful, but it relates to what young people already care about as part of their authentic selves,” Mars says.
Principal Cheryl Elliott says she is thrilled about the program and its prospective impact on her students.
“It is exciting for our students to experience this cultural event,” Elliott says. “I’m really excited for my students who will be learning about the blues from local greats.”
The at event, each student will receive an art-quality harmonica from the Columbus Blues Alliance. Mars says the hope behind the gift it to inspire students with music.
