The Akron Steel Band will deck the holidays with an island vibe as they present a free concert on Friday, December 6, 4-5 p.m. at the Kenmore Branch Library, 969 Kenmore Blvd. in Akron.
The decade-long running Summit Academy Secondary School – Akron Steel Band will perform its popular favorites such as “Soca Feet” and “Crazy Train” mixed in with holiday classics “Jingle Bells,” “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Carol of the Bells,” “O Christmas Tree” and others.
“The students have been working diligently on the Christmas music since mid-October and have impressed me so much with their dedication and hard work,” says music teacher Melanie Reymond, who instructs the musicians daily as part of their music class.
The Akron Steel Band has a growing following of alumni who perform with current students at the band’s four yearly concerts.
“We are so grateful for our dedicated alumni who come back to play at our performances. They are great leaders, and it is wonderful to see how much they continue to care about the program post-graduation,” says Reymond.
The Akron Steel Band has about 15 members on a regular basis. Among its other high-profile concerts, the band performs annually at the NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Walks Summit County event held at The University of Akron in October.
