“I believe.” Students at Summit Academy – Lorain embraced those two words as they enjoyed a magical Polar Express Day filled with holiday delight. The surprise December 19 event was the last of 11 themed special days the school hosted between Thanksgiving and winter break.
The students, many dressed in pajamas, shared a school-wide lunch and then watched the classic movie, “The Polar Express.” Class celebrations trimmed with hot chocolate and candy canes passed out by staff members helped bring holiday cheer to all.
Each student received new Summit Bobcat shirts, toiletries and personal items, hats, gloves and other winter gear, treats and toys thanks to the nearly $3,700 in donations raised for the Stuff the Stocking project.
“As students walked through the cafeteria to each station to get their gifts, the excitement in their body language and smiles on their faces was absolutely heartwarming”, describes Principal Jasmine Rengh. “We heard quite a few students squeal and even one say, ‘Oh, my gosh, I finally get my own Summit sweatshirt.’ It was an amazing experience from start to finish.”
“It was such a great afternoon, with so many smiles and excited kids,” adds Behavior Specialist Kim Wanosky. “It’s so heartwarming for them to be so excited and know that they are going home with a positive attitude for the winter break.”
Generous donors included American Legion Post 30, NAMI of Lorain County, Road Adventures Cleveland, Liberty Ford Vermillion, Moose Lodge No. 778, Norwalk Heating-& Air Conditioning, Animal Clinic Northview and its staff members individually, Mercy Health – Lorain Hospital and countless community members.
